✎ Learning how to pick up new skills quickly is one of the most powerful habits you can build for your business and your personal growth. Elon Musk famously taught himself rocket science simply by reading textbooks borrowed from experts like Jim Cantrell. Instead of waiting years for formal courses, he dove straight into complex manuals on rocket propulsion and aerodynamics. By focusing on the absolute basics what he calls the trunk of the tree before the leaves Elon was able to master tough concepts in record time. He also uses first principles thinking to break big problems down to their raw materials, which is how he realized SpaceX could build its own rockets for a fraction of the usual cost.
✎ To master any subject fast, you have to get out of the classroom and start building real projects immediately. When Elon was just twelve years old, he learned basic programming by writing his own space video game called Blastar. Later on, when Tesla struggled to build the Model 3, he moved his office directly to the factory floor to learn where the work actually happened. He also relies on constant feedback loops, setting impossible 30-day deadlines, and asking experts direct questions, like when he hired Tom Mueller to build giant rocket engines. By putting in focused hours and moving knowledge from one field to another, you can shortcut years of trial and error.
✎ Making fast, effective decisions is just as critical as acquiring new skills. When SpaceX needed to redesign Starship, Elon Musk switched the primary material from carbon fiber to stainless steel because the math showed steel was forty-five times cheaper and could withstand extreme heat. He makes fast choices by running every problem through strict rules: questioning who owns a requirement, deleting unnecessary steps, and avoiding the trap of optimizing things that shouldn't exist. He even uses an idiot index to check if a finished part costs way more than its raw materials. By applying these exact habits to your own goals, you can stop procrastinating, overcome self-doubt, and make huge progress in the next thirty days.
